This is the standard staple size, with a thin wire gauge of 23 and legs measuring 6mm or ¼ inch long. In the case of the standard staple, the length of the legs is 6mm, which is equal to ¼ inch. The first number is the wire gauge size, while the second number is the length of the legs. Staple sizes are displayed in metric, i.e., millimeters.įor a standard-sized staple, this will look like ’23/6′. Staple sizes are usually shown on the bottom of a stapler so that you can easily find out which staples will work with your machine. These will have a gauge of between 15 and 16, making them the thickest and strongest type of staple. ![]() Heavy gauge staples are used in construction, for example, as roof staples to hold shingles in place. This is a more sturdy gauge of staple which might be used in upholstery, but it is not quite sturdy enough to be used in construction. Medium wire gauges are between 18 and 19 in thickness. The higher the number of the gauge is, the thinner the wire is. For example, if a staple is size ’23/6′, it means the wire gauge is 23, and the legs are 6mm (equivalent to ¼ inch).įine wire gauges are the most common types of staple used in offices, as these are the most inexpensive, and they are plenty strong enough to be suitable for holding a few pieces of paper together. You will see this measurement referenced on a staple size as the first number. Wire Gauge Sizesįine wire gauges will be sized between 20 and 23 in thickness. The teeth will usually be tapered or have a chisel point so that the staples easily slice through the material. The teeth of a staple are the ends of the legs, which are the first part of the staple to come into contact with the material you are stapling. If the materials you are stapling are strong or thick, then a thicker wire gauge will be more appropriate. If the wire gauge is thin, then it will be more likely to snap under pressure, and therefore thin wire gauges are not compatible with heavy-duty projects. This is essentially the thickness of the metal, which will, of course, play a part in determining how strong the staple is. The wire gauge of a staple is the measurement of the wire used. When you apply staples to paper, this is the part of the staple that is going to be visible across your work. It is also known as the width of the staple (while the legs are the length). The crown of the staple is the top part of the staple, which connects the two legs. When you are looking at staple sizes and see a measurement mentioned, for example, ½ inch staples, this means that each leg of the staple measures ½ inch in length. This is the most important measurement on a staple because it is the legs that will dictate how many pieces of paper you can securely staple together.Ī chunkier pile of papers that need to be bound together is going to require staples with longer legs. The legs are the two pieces of the staple that stick out and are pushed through the paper when you use a stapler. When people talk about staple size, what they are actually referencing is the size of the legs on a staple. Wire gauges are categorized into fine (sized between 20 and 23 in thickness), medium (sized between 18 and 19 in thickness), and heavy gauges (sized between 15 and 16 in thickness). If you work in an office or a school, or you simply love stationary, knowing the different sizes of staples, including standard staple sizes, is going to help make sure you use the right size for a specific project and don’t wind up with staples which don’t fit in your stapler.Ī stable has a standard size that contains a thin wire gauge of 23 and legs measuring 6mm or ¼ inch long you can easily find other stable sizes with a wire gauge of 23/8, 23/10, 23/13, 23/15, 23/17, 23/20 and 23/24. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The Dalai Lama and his closest advisers believed the Chinese government was planning to assassinate him. However, in 1959, continued suppression of the Tibetan people by Chinese troops led to their uprising. In 1954, the Dalai Lama went to Beijing for peace talks with Mao Zedong and other Chinese leaders. In October of that year, the People's Republic of China invaded Tibet against little resistance. In 1950, at the age of 15, Tenzin assumed full political power as the Dalai Lama. The two remained friends until Harrer's death in 2006. At age 11, Tenzin met Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountaineer, who became one of his tutors, teaching him about the outside world. His schooling consisted of logic, Tibetan art and culture, Sanskrit, medicine and Buddhist philosophy, which is divided into five other categories dealing with the perfection of wisdom, monastic discipline, metaphysics, logic and epistemology-the study of knowledge. Tenzin began his religious education at age 6. Thus, Buddhists believe life is a continual journey of experience and discovery and not divided between life and the afterlife. The second flame is not identical to the first, nor is it totally different. Under Buddhism, the consciousness of a person can become part of the consciousness of another person, as a flame moves from one candle to another. The Buddhist belief of rebirth is a concept of "renewal" and not exactly reincarnation of a spirit or body. ![]() Buddhism encourages its followers not to believe in those teachings, as followers of other religions believe in their religion's central figures and dogma, but rather to explore, understand, and test the truths against their own experiences. Within these truths are countless layers of teachings on the nature of existence, life, death and the self. Unlike other religions that are centered on a supreme being, Buddhism is centered on four basic truths: Life is not perfect people are left unsatisfied by trying to make life perfect people can realize there is a better way to achieve fulfillment and by living one's life through wisdom, ethical conduct and mental discipline, people will reach enlightenment. Buddhism came to Tibet in the 8th century, CE. Originating in India, the religion spread throughout most of eastern and southern Asia. Put together, the title of Dalai Lama is literally "Ocean Teacher," meaning a "teacher spiritually as deep as the ocean." Buddhist Teachingsīuddhism was created in the sixth century, BCE, with the birth of Buddha Siddhartha Gautama, making it one of the oldest religions practiced today. "Lama" is the equivalent of the Sanskrit word "guru," or spiritual teacher. "Dalai" means "ocean" in Mongolian (the name "Gyatso" comes from the Tibetan word for ocean). Dalai Lamas are also enlightened beings who have postponed their own afterlife and chosen to take rebirth to benefit humanity. Young Lhamo was renamed Tenzin Gyatso and proclaimed the 14th Dalai Lama.ĭalai Lamas are believed to be the reincarnation of Avalokitesvara, an important Buddhist deity and the personification of compassion. After several months of searching for a successor to the 13th Dalai Lama and following many significant spiritual signs, religious officials located Lhamo Thondup, at age 2, and identified him as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. ![]() Lhamo Thondup was the fifth of 16 children-seven of whom died at a young age. For nearly 50 years, he had aimed to establish Tibet as a self-governing, democratic state. Tibetans believe him to be the reincarnation of his predecessors. He is the head of state and spiritual leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile based in Dharamshala, India. Lhamo Thondup was born on Jin Taktser, China, northeast of Tibet, to a peasant family. In December 2008, the Dalai Lama announced his semi-retirement after having gallstone surgery. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. The Dalai Lama has also conducted hundreds of conferences, lectures and workshops worldwide, as part of his humanitarian efforts. However, the Chinese government has shown no signs of moving toward peace and reconciliation with Tibet. Since then, the Dalai Lama has taken numerous actions in hopes of establishing an autonomous Tibetan state within the People's Republic of China. Fearing assassination, he and thousands of followers fled to Dharamshala in northern India, where they established an alternative government. The People's Republic of China invaded that same year. At age 15, he assumed political power of Tibet as the Dalai Lama.
